Phases of Learning

In the Early Years at St Joseph's College, each child's unique spiritual, physical, social and emotional needs are developed. We build on prior experiences to develop a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy. Promoting learning through meaningful contexts that include investigations, play, explicit teaching, and establishing routines and transitions.

In the Junior Years, the explicit teaching of skills support and encourage learners to explore the world and develop meaning through inquiry-based learning. Teachers embrace innovative teaching practices to deliver rich, dynamic, student-driven 21st century learning. Through the use of flexible learning spaces and technology, students have opportunities to engage, design and produce in environments that are conducive to creativity.

Students begin to work with more abstract ideas and strengthen critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving. Learning builds independence and the confidence to question, test ideas, and apply learning in new contexts.

Transition to Year 7: Students are supported to settle into new routines and expectations while building friendships and independence. Year 7 students join a learning group supported by a team of specialist teachers, with wellbeing support through a Pastoral Hub and Homework Help Club. Students can explore interests through SPARK and extracurricular options, and begin future planning through our Early Careers Program.

Graduate milestone focus: Independent learning habits, purposeful questioning, research skills, and applying learning to real-world situations.

Students build on their strengths and take greater ownership of learning. They choose pathways that prepare them for life beyond school.

Pathways and vocational opportunities: Students may pursue an ATAR pathway, a school-based apprenticeship/traineeship, or a hybrid pathway combining options. We offer Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificates, plus opportunities through Gateways to Industries and external partners (including further certificates and a Diploma of Business). From Year 10, students can take part in work experience to build employability skills and clarify career goals.

Through the Gateways to Industries program and external partnerships, students can also pursue additional certificates or even a Diploma of Business. From Year 10 onward, students can participate in work experience and develop real-world skills to clarify career ambitions.

Progressing towards QCE: In Years 10–12, students work towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). In Years 11 and 12, pastoral care becomes a personalised coaching program—each student is matched with a learning coach for regular check-ins, goal setting and support to stay on track.
